How to use Whole Story
- Tap the record button and start talking.
- Whole Story transcribes what you say into text as you go.
- Tap the dot again to stop. Read the words back, fix a name if it misheard one, and tap Keep — nothing is saved until you do.
Your entries live in a list you can open any time, and you can share any entry's text out through the iOS share sheet.
Common questions
Why does Whole Story need the microphone?
It is the only permission Whole Story asks for. The microphone lets the app hear you; the speech model that turns your voice into text is bundled inside the app and runs on your iPhone, so your voice is never sent anywhere to be transcribed. There is no separate speech-recognition permission.
What is "Ask your story"?
Type a question into search — "how do I feel about work?" — and Whole Story answers from your own entries, showing the entries it drew on underneath. The answer is assembled on your phone from your words alone; nothing is generated by a cloud service and nothing leaves the device.
How do I get my entries out?
Open an entry and use the share button to send its text anywhere you like — Files, Messages, Notes, email, wherever the iOS share sheet lets you send text. The one-time purchase adds Export in Settings, which writes every entry out as plain text files in one go.
What happens if I delete the app?
Your entries are gone. Whole Story stores everything only on your iPhone — there is no server copy, no account, and no backup on our end to restore from. If you want to keep something, share it out before you delete the app. (If you have iCloud or Finder/iTunes backups of your phone itself, your entries may still exist inside an old backup, but that's a feature of your device backups, not of Whole Story.)
I paid for the unlock, but it still shows as locked.
Open Settings inside Whole Story and tap Restore purchases. Make sure you're signed into the same Apple Account you purchased with. If it still doesn't unlock, email us with the date of purchase and we'll help.
Can I get a refund?
Refunds are handled by Apple, not by us. Visit reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in, and select the purchase. Email us first if something isn't working — we're happy to help sort it out.
Where is my data stored?
On your iPhone, and nowhere else. See the privacy policy for the full detail on how it's stored and protected.
Reporting a bug
We'd rather hear about it than have you quietly stop using the app. The most useful report tells us:
- what you did, step by step
- what you expected, and what happened instead
- your iOS version and iPhone model
Feature requests
Welcome. Whole Story is small and focused on purpose — we say no to a lot to keep it that way — but we read every suggestion.
